Subterranean Secrets: Washington Park Lake and Albany’s Sewer System

May 15, 2021: 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Free

Join us for a Walk & Talk around Washington Park’s picturesque Lake with Albany Water Deputy Commissioner Bill Simcoe. We’ll explore the history of the Washington Park branch of the Beaver Creek Sewer District. Who built this old brick system? Who was Ruben Bingham and what’s his connection to the park? Bill will walk us through how the Albany Water Department utilizes state-of-the-art systems to control the flow of the lake in an effort to protect the city and its residence from dangerous and costly flooding. We’ll hear about ongoing repairs and rehabilitation of the old brick system and find out how Albany Water is dealing with the increase of extreme weather events due to climate change. You’ll never look at the lake the same way again!
