Washington Park Vegetation Renewal & Management Report
This report has set forth a series of historic and existing conditions information, and presented national guidelines for the treatment of vegetation in historic landscapes to provide a basis for the renewal and management of the vegetation within the King Fountain and Croquet Lawn areas of Washington Park. The approach taken in the proposals addresses the historic record, personal safety and maintenance aspects of park vegetation. Considerable additional information on vegetation maintenance and renewal is included in the three appendices. One of these, excerpted from a report for Downing Park, addresses the annual and cyclic care of vegetation by landscape
type
and is directly applicable to Washington Park. The American Association of Nurserymen pruning standards are also a helpful professional source. Guidance for the renewal of historic shrubs and planting of new shrubs was developed for Washington Park for the Madison Street Border project and is included here as well. The task of renewing the vegetation of washington Park, and with it the historic spatial organization is a large one. It can be accomplished over a period of time. The benefit of this report is the setting out of the vision for the parks vegetation as a goal for the future that can be undertaken with the combined efforts of the City of Albany private citizens and interested groups.
