King
Fountain
& CroQuet Lawn Areas
In the Croquet Lawn planting of the two tree groups at the center walk on the south edge is recommended. These should be tall maturing deciduous trees that reflect the historic plant list. In addition the mass shrub planting at the base of the slope and the related ground cover at the edges is shown as an initial project. This planting will recreate the spatial separation between the Croquet Lawn and King Fountain areas.
Some initial plantings on the Mall are also shown. Seven trees at the south end of the
King
Fountain area and two plus four at either end of the Croquet Lawn area are shown as early installations. These trees would begin the renewal of the Mall.
In sununary, the potential areas for short term projects are shown on the following plan. Listing these vegetation renewal projects clockwise from the top center, they are:
|
•
|
Formal tree plantings (6) at north edge of Croquet Lawn;
|
|
•
|

These areas of work are identified as initial priorities to be undertaken in the next two to five years, while additional recommendations can be incremented over time. These projects will depend on financial, staff and volunteer commitment. In undertaking this planning project and its implementation the Washington Park Conservancy is conunitted to open communication and cooperation with the City of Albany and interested others for the betterment of Washington Park.
